What is a Green Wall?

A green wall is sometimes referred to as a living wall, biowall, or vertical garden. The two main categories of green walls: Living Walls and Green Facades both allow for controlled vegetation growth and with careful plant selection will not damage surface materials unlike vines adhered directly to a wall.

Living Walls can be comprised of free standing or building mounted modular panels made of stainless steel, high-density plastic, or organic material such as mineral wool or felt. Suitable plant species contained in the living wall are sustained by irrigation systems and often require fertilization and regular maintenance. The primary advantage of a living wall is its ability to produce an instantaneous green effect either outside or inside, even at considerable heights.

Green Façades are made up of climbing plants either growing directly on a wall or a specially designed trellis structure mounted to the wall’s surface. Climbing vines rooted in soil at ground level or in specially insulated pots above ground are naturally included and trained to grow up the side of the building or trellis system.

Living Wall Applications

Indoor applications are widely used in residential, retail, and office buildings worldwide. Sizes of installations vary from small to large, depending on available interior space, desired effect, and budget. Below are some examples of indoor living walls ranging in size.

Outdoor Living Wall applications range in size depending on microclimate, desired effect, available space, and budget. Below are some examples of exterior living walls ranging in size from modest to large. Outdoor living walls can add life and softness to otherwise hard and lifeless urban areas, advertise corporate brands, or reduce energy costs when used to envelop most of a high rise building. Several examples of the exterior living walls shown below are located in climates with winter conditions similar to that of Toronto.

Free Standing and A-Frame Units by GLTi (as shown below) are intended for both ornamental and agricultural applications. The standard size of the Free Standing unit is 6′h x 2′w. Standard sizes for A-Frame units are 3′w x 4′h (Small), and 4′w x 6′h (Large). To some extent both Free Standing and A-Frame Units are customizable.
