Vertical Landscape Architects Inc have helped hundreds of clients with landscape planning and design, ranging from simple layout, detailed planting, hardscape, landscape features, permit drawings, etc. We provide on site consultation, master planning, as well as installation, contracting, contract administration and project management services to residential, commercial, and institutional sectors. Below are a selected sample of drawings and pictures showing selected projects by Vertical Landscape Architects Inc.
Civic / Institutional Design – Queen’s Park
VLA partnered with artist Kip Jones to prepare a monument competition for the Correctional Workers of Ontario. Our entry represents the proud correctional workers serving our community and those who have passed away, often prematurely due to stressful working conditions. Out of the footprint of the fallen correctional worker springs new life in the form of an ornamental flowering tree. We made it to the Semi-Final round of the competition with 5 other teams.
Master Planning – Camp Wahanowin
VLA prepared a Master Plan for Camp Wahanowin. The improvement areas included a double court beach volleyball area, a wooden boardwalk connecting the roadway to an existing ski shed and boat dock, and a large fireplace with benches for groups of campers overlooking an adjacent water body.
Commercial Landscape Design – Twenty7 Auto Club
VLA prepared Landscape Plans for Twenty7 Auto Club, an exclusive club for high-end automotive enthusiasts in Missisauga, ON. The scope of work included detailed drawings for landscape site plan review and construction. Specific improvement areas included planting beds and walkways for the front entrance, parking lot expansion and a refuse area and structure.
Commercial Landscape Design – Jawny Bakers Restaurant
VLA prepared landscape drawings to update and modernize Jawny Bakers Restaurant in Toronto, ON. Improvement areas included the rear patio and planting bed, a raised planter bed along the side of the restaurant, service area screening with wooden structures, planters at the front, as well as a lower patio for private functions. Drawings included layout and plating plans, elevations, sections and details.
Parking Lot Design – Centennial College
VLA was retained by Centennial College to redesign the 90,000 square foot Ashtonbee Campus parking lot. Our specific objective was to optimize traffic flow and increase the number of parking spaces. By relocating light standards, realigning service entrances, and reconfiguring the parking lot, we were able to include 18 additional parking spaces for staff, students and visitors.
Cemetery Master Planning – Massey Mausoleum
VLA was retained by the Massey Mausoleum Foundation to prepare a Cemetery Master Plan. The Master Plan includes a detailed layout for future monuments as well as formal planting areas to accentuate the majestic Massey Mausoleum structure in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, in Toronto, ON. Other components of the master plan included updating the existing burial plan / records, a tree retention and pruning plan, and monument design standards.
Outdoor Kitchen & Patio Design, Toronto, ON
Vertical Landscape Architects designed a new outdoor kitchen and patio for a high-end client in Toronto, ON. Our scope of work included preparing a drawing package for building permit approval from the City (plans, elevations and section details), and contract administration with the contractor. Below are pictures of some of the contract drawings used to construct the addition, and pictures of the completed project built by Infinity Contracting.
Shed Structure with Patio Area & Swale
Vertical Landcape Architects worked closely with the clients and Infinity Contracting to prepare a permit drawing package and landscape plan. The clients wanted a shed structure with a roof overhang to provide an additional patio space in the rear yard. However, special design considerations were necessary due to the presence of an ephemeral stream (an important drainage channel for the neighbourhood during wet periods). The location and the structural engineering of the concrete slab foundation had to account for the stream and occasionally wet conditions. Stone retainers and river rock were integrated into the design to maintain and enhance the natural waterway.
Residential Landscape Design & Installation
Vertical Landscape Architects worked closely with the clients to understand what design elements, styles and materials were desired for this project. Concept plans were prepared and finalized for material and labour estimates. We removed existing sod, obsolete irrigation lines, and unwanted shrubs. To assist with drainage issues, we introduced a weeping tile and regraded the rear yard. A 200 cu ft pond and waterfall feature was added to the rear yard along with a new irrigation system including rotor heads for the grass and drip emitters for the planting beds. The raised planting beds in the rear yard have lovely florentine stones, and large shrubs and perennials selected to tolerate the toxic conditions created by a large, existing black walnut tree on the property. Due to low light conditions and drainage issues, the side yards were landscaped with random flagstone pathways (on a built up bed of compacted aggregate) flanked by river stone. The irrigation system in the front yard was modified to accommodate new raised planting beds with mature trees and shrubs, and areas where new sod and grass seed was added. Finally, lighting was introduced throughout the property including path lighting, as well as up and down lighting of various landscape and architectural features.
